چکیده

The problem of accurate depth estimation using stereo in the presence of specular reeection is addressed. Specular reeection, a fundamental and ubiquitous reeection mechanism, is viewpoint dependent and can cause large intensity diierences at corresponding points, resulting in signiicant depth errors. We analyze the physics of specular reeection and the geometry of stereopsis which lead to a relationship between stereo vergence, surface roughness, and the likelihood of a correct match. Given a lower bound on surface roughness, an optimal binocular stereo connguration can be determined which maximizes precision in depth estimation despite specular reeection. However, surface roughness is diicult to estimate in unstructured environments. Therefore, trinocular conngurations, independent of surface roughness, are determined such that at each scene point visible to all sensors, at least one stereo pair can produce correct depth. We have developed a simple algorithm to reconstruct depth from the multiple stereo pairs.

Binocular Stereo in the Presence of Specular Re ectionDinkar

We address the problem of accurate depth estimation using stereo in the presence of specular reeec-tion. Specular reeection is viewpoint dependent and can cause large intensity diierences at corresponding points in stereo images. Hence, mismatches could result causing signiicant depth errors. Our approach seeks to determine a scene independent optimal stereo connguration such that intensity mis...

Visibility with One Reeection

We extend the concept of the polygon visible from a source point S in a simple polygon by considering visibility with two types of reeection, specular and diiuse. In specular reeection a light ray reeects from an edge of the polygon according to the rule: the angle of incidence equals the angle of reeection. In diiuse reeection a light ray reeects from an edge of the polygon in all inward direc...

Visibility with Multiple Diiuse Reeections

The combinatorial complexity of the region lit up from a point light source inside a simple n-gon with perfectly reeecting edges, after at most k specular reeections was established as O(n 2k) 2]. A lower bound of ((n=k) 2k) was also established, matching the upper bound for any xed k. In a real situation, surfaces may not be perfect mirrors; indeed most surfaces may be non-shiny or rough, caus...

An Inexpensive BDRF Model for Physically-Based Rendering

A new BRDF model is presented which can be viewed as an kind of intermediary model between empirism and theory. Main results of physics are observed (energy conservation, reciprocity rule, microfacet theory) and numerous phenomena involved in light reeection are accounted for, in a physically plausible way (incoherent and coherent reeection, spectrum modiications, anisotropy, self-shadowing, mu...
